David 6th January 2016

I have known Justin since the 80's, when we met throughour mutual interest in railways. Over the years we have shared journeys both in the UK and in mainline Europe, although I never got him to follow me across the big pond, where I do most of my train watching nowadays. He also taught me bridge, and I played with him countless times over the years, particularly at Wimbledon Bridge Club. We won the CCF congress at Croydon in 2005 and successfully defended our title a year later, the last time it was played. We also won a couple of teams events at Petersfield, also in the early noughties. Justin also shared my interest in cricket, we have watched games at various venues including the 2007 Lords final when Justin's Durham came out on top. Justin put me up numerous times in Cricklewood, his culinary delights provided were invariably a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie. He called it a "JMW spectacular" and it will be forever thus as far as I am concerned. Just the past weekend I attended the Boness & Kinneil Diesel Gala. He would have absolutely loved it when a Class 37(025) was, as he would have put it "steaming to some order" ! I'm sure he would have said "My Lords!" or words to that effect. I can't begin to contemplate what a huge void that Justin's untimely passing is going to leave, both to myself and his family and many other friends. Rest in Peace, Dave Thornton
